Placement in Secondary Mathematics Courses

Walnut Valley Unified School District is committed to offering a rigorous sequence of mathematics courses in our secondary schools to prepare students for post-secondary academic and career success. The district has worked closely with math practitioners in designing coursework to best support students.

Middle Schools:

Our district provides three pathways for students to grow and succeed in middle school mathematics. The attached Middle School Math Sequence chart (see below) shows how these pathways align with the State Standards and the new California Mathematics Framework. Students may move from one pathway to another through our established district placement process. This process uses several objective academic measures such as interim and summative assessments, placement tests aligned to state standards, classroom performance, grades, CAASPP results, and report cards. Each pathway is designed to ensure that students finish middle school fully prepared for the rigor of high school math.

High Schools:

At the high school level, our mathematics placement policy, outlined in Board Policy 6152.1, provides a consistent and research-based process for placing students using multiple objective academic measures. This placement protocol supports students in progressing through a sequence of mathematics courses that meet the expectations for admission to the University of California and California State University systems. It is designed to ensure that all students have a fair and appropriate pathway to reach advanced math opportunities based on readiness and demonstrated performance.

Should you have any questions regarding our mathematics placement policies and pathways, please contact your student’s middle or high school.
