The Arts in Walnut Valley Unified School District

Walnut Valley Unified School District was designated as an ‘Arts for All’ school district within Los Angeles County in 2014 with the goal of deepening its already established programming, rigorous curricula, and nationally-recognized achievements in the arts. The district recognizes the importance of educating the whole child and is committed to both maintaining and expanding the arts curriculum. Many strong arts programs exist within WVUSD thanks to its dedicated faculty, administration and a community that truly values arts education.  WVUSD music programs are especially strong at the secondary levels as seen by our Grammy Award winning high school music programs and performances that regularly receive national recognition. WVUSD received NAMM's Best Communities in Music Education Award  in 2017,  2018 and 2019.  In  2017-2018, WVUSD partnered with the Ahman Dance Company to bring a 12- week world dance curriculum to every third grade student in the district. This year, 2018-19, WVUSD is collaborating with Dramatic Results to provide a 10-week integrated Theater Program to all of our 2cnd grade students. This year, all 1st grade students at our nine elementary school will receive 10 weeks of world dance instruction with our partners from Ahman Dance. A grant from TELA (Teaching English Language through the Arts) will provide arts integration workshops for our English Language Specialists.

Secondary Arts Programs

The music curriculum in WVUSD begins in 4th grade with an exploratory wheel while band and choir are offered in 5th grade. Comprehensive music programs include orchestra, various levels of band, marching band, jazz band, guitar, music enrichment and various levels of choir.  Middle schools also offer art, video production classes, musical theatre and drama as well as after school musical production programs; in high school students can take a play-writing/directing class or stagecraft and design. Both high school dance teams are nationally recognized (WHS has 8 national championships) and the applied arts classes offered at this level include: Ceramics, Fundamentals of Art, Advanced Art, Studio Art, AP Studio Art, Video Production, CADD, and Photoshop/Photography. Walnut High School offers a High School of the Arts Pathway which prepares students for careers in the arts. Diamond Bar High School has a successful Performing Arts Academy where students can receive training from industry professionals. The WVUSD Arts Showcase is a day long celebration of our arts programs, featuring art exhibits and student performances from all levels
