Independent Study
Short-Term Independent Study
Walnut Valley Unified School District offers Short-Term Independent Study as an option for students who will be absent from school for a short period of time due to temporary circumstances. This option allows students to complete assigned work during their absence so they can stay connected to their learning.
Short-Term Independent Study may be available for up to 15 school days in a school year, but requests must be approved by the school site and are considered on a case-by-case basis. Parents or guardians should contact their school office in advance to request a Short-Term Independent Study agreement.
The supervising teacher will provide assignments for the student to complete during the absence. All work must be submitted upon the student’s return to school and will be assessed based on completion and quality. Because this process requires coordination with teachers, families are encouraged to submit requests as early as possible prior to the planned absence.
For more information or to request Short-Term Independent Study, please contact your child’s school directly.
Long-Term Independent Study
Long-Term Independent Study is available through the District’s alternative education program, Ron Hockwalt Academies. This program provides an independent study option for students in grades K–12 who may benefit from a more flexible learning environment.
Families interested in Long-Term Independent Study should review the program information and contact Ron Hockwalt Academies directly to learn more about enrollment, program expectations, and available supports.
