Pass the Gavel!

December 13, 2018

Kelli Gile, Office of Community Resources

WALNUT, CA—Four incumbent Walnut Valley USD Board Members were sworn in during the December 12 meeting.

For the first time in the District’s history, governing officials ran unopposed during an election cycle.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Taylor administered oaths of office to trustees Helen Hall, Cindy Ruiz, Tony Torng, and Layla Abou-Taleb.

Hall, Ruiz, and Torng will serve four-year terms, while Abou-Taleb, who was appointed in 2017, will serve a two-year term.

Additionally, the trustees elected Helen Hall as president, Larry Redinger as vice president, and Layla Abou-Taleb as clerk during the annual reorganization meeting.

These roles are one-year terms and are effective immediately.

Outgoing Board president Cindy Ruiz was honored with an engraved plaque and flowers for her outstanding leadership.

“It’s been wonderful having you as president!” said Superintendent Dr. Taylor.

“Thank you so much for your hard work and commitment to the position.”

The board members then took turns paying tribute to their colleague.

“Cindy has been delightful taking care of things!” commented Redinger as he presented a gift from the trustees.

“Thank you for a very good year! You’ve been an outstanding president and I’ve enjoyed working with you,” said Hall.

“In my observation, Cindy is really passionate about our school district,” Dr. Torng added.

“You’re driven to do what’s best. And you’ve made it smooth sailing for all of us,” added Abou-Taleb.

“We’re a great team and I appreciate your support, camaraderie, and friendship,” Ruiz replied.

“I look forward to working with Helen as our next president and another great year!”
