Elementary Schools:
The kindergarten through fifth grade pilot elementary school teachers in Walnut Valley Unified School District have completed an extensive review of English Language Arts textbooks. After a thorough examination of all of the materials, the following books have been recommended for adoption: Benchmark Advance by Benchmark Education Company, for kindergarten through fifth grades. The Benchmark Advance series utilizes integrated reading, writing, speaking, and listening instruction. The embedded teaching techniques enable all students to master rigorous learning goals with the support of strong differentiated instruction.
Middle Schools:
The middle school English Language Arts pilot teachers in Walnut Valley Unified School District have completed an extensive review of English Language Arts textbooks. After a thorough examination of all of the materials, the following books have been recommended for adoption in grades six through eight: California Collections by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The Collections series -- with program consultants including Kylene Beers, Martha Hougen, Carol Jago, William McBride, Erik Palmer and Lydia Stack-- provides a multi-faceted digital and print approach that transcends the traditional anthology and resonates with today’s students.
Health Education:
The Health Education Teachers in Walnut Valley Unified School District have completed an extensive review of health education textbooks. After a thorough examination of all of the materials, the following book has been recommended for adoption for the high school Heath class: Comprehensive Health by Goodheart-Willcox Company. Comprehensive Health provides content aligned with Common Core State Standards, and the California Health Education Content Standards. Additionally, the textbook complies with updated Education Codes in support of health education. The textbook provides rich lesson plan ideas, with powerful resources to support the teachers. The textbook builds students’ knowledge and skills about health using research-based information. It also includes meaningful activities that allow the student to learn about human psyche and mental health.
Parents are welcome to stop by the District Office at 880 S. Lemon Avenue from Tuesday, March 21, through Monday, April 3, between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm to review the materials.
The recommendation will go before the Board of Education on April 19.
