Walnut Valley USD Board Honors Outstanding Students and Parents
WALNUT, CA—The Walnut Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees honored stellar students and dedicated parents during the November 18 meeting.
Chaparral Middle School parent Mary Chang was lauded with the Partner in Education Award.
Mary has been the school’s Chinese American Parent Association (CAPA) president for the past three years and has been largely responsible for fundraising efforts that have provided Science lab experiments, Robotics, Science Olympiad, Promotion ceremony gold cords, and Teacher mini-grants at the school.
“Mary, through her leadership with CAPA at Chaparral, has provided many opportunities for our teachers and students,” said Principal Ron Thibodeaux.
Chaparral eighth grader Jacob Au received the Super Star Student Award.
The school focuses on the four-A’s - academics, activities, athletics, and arts.
“We celebrate well-roundedness in our students and Jacob is certainly a well-rounded kid!” Thibodeaux added.
Jacob is a straight-A student, a member of the Leo Club, the fastest eighth grader at Chaparral (including a three-time cross-country League champion), and a member of the highest school orchestra.
Suzanne Middle School parents Kathy Youmans and Terry Tamashiro received the Partner in Education Award.
The dedicated volunteers are current Community Club co-presidents, the volunteer group that supplements a variety of resources for the school.
“Kathy and Terry are regularly on campus organizing events and supporting students in every way possible,” said Principal Les Ojeda.
“They work exceptionally well with one another and add a feeling of unity and harmony to the Community Club.”
The parent honorees have been involved with numerous activities including 6th Grade Renaissance Fair, Greek Festival, 6th Grade Summit, science assemblies, Blue and White Tea, 8th Grade Summit, end-of-the-year Picnic, 8th Grade Promotion, Science Olympiad, and Math Counts.
“They do an amazing amount of work for our school!” Ojeda added.
Suzanne eighth grader Katarina Su was honored with the Super Star Student Award for providing outstanding leadership at the school.
“She is a young lady with vision, passion, motivation and integrity,” Ojeda said.
Katarina is a peer counselor and creates character education videos for 7th and 8th Grade Summits.
She also heads up the 7th grade Impact group whose members are encouraged to learn leadership skills and work together to create positive change on campus.
Katarina established the Impact leadership team and organizes bi-weekly activities for the group.
“She has heart, focus, and gives 100% each and every day.”
