Castle Rock Star Student, Community Partner Lauded
WALNUT, CA—The Walnut Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees honored the Castle Rock Elementary Super Star Student and Community Partner during the April 16 meeting.
Fifth grader Ana Rodriguez–Mancera was honored with the Super Star Student Award.
She was selected for her courage, dedication to learning, and wonderful attitude, said Principal Carol Sullivan. In August 2012, Ana came to the school as a non-English speaking student - new to the country and school.
“Throughout all this, she kept a smile on her face and a positive attitude. Academically she was challenged, but a very smart girl, and on her way to the top,” said 4th grade teacher Michelle Boots.
In just a few short months, Ana became comfortable enough with her language and friends to become a chatterbox!
“It was a cause for celebration,” Boots said. ”She has a heart of gold, a phenomenal work ethic, and is dedicated to her learning.”
“Anna has a delightfully infectious laugh, a quick smile, is extremely hard working, and is a natural leader,“ said current teacher Nicole Rodgers.
“Ana has become nearly fluent in English, a hard-working student, a wonderful friend to everyone, and a model of all of our IB attitudes and learner profile. Thank you Ana, for being our Star Student!” Sullivan added.
Parent volunteer Rowena Joe received the Partner in Education Award.
“She has gone above and beyond to serve the school community,” Sullivan said.
Rowena has served as Community Club Treasurer for the past three years.
“She diligently watches every penny and provides accurate reporting and council on financial matters that have been so appreciated by our staff and families,” Sullivan said.
Rowena has provided countless hours to the school as yearbook coordinator and unofficial school photographer. She also helps organize and run Castle Rock’s book fairs.
“I know there are many other things she has done. But, Rowena is the kind of person who quietly serves without expecting anything in return,” Sullivan added.
