Castle Rock Chess Champion
DIAMOND BAR, CA--Castle Rock Elementary School 5th grader Richard Shu won 2nd Place in the 2012 Junior National Chess Championship on April 29 in San Diego.
Richard shared the top score of 4.5 (4 wins and 1 draw out of 7 games) with the First Place person but received the Second Place due to a complex tiebreaker calculation.
Richard started playing the strategic game with his father and older brother just a year and a half ago.
He quickly advanced and began playing with numerous chess clubs and national and local tournaments.
The Diamond Bar student is currently ranked in the top 110 in the United States in the 10 year-old category.
“I like the deep logic thinking and the thrill of winning a game,” Richard said. He sometimes plays up to five hours during just one game.
He also enjoys attending tournaments in different cities and competing with players of different ages that range from 10 to 80!
Richard looks forward to continuing chess next year at South Pointe Middle School and even hopes to launch a club on campus.
