Transitional Kindergarten Program
Walnut Valley Unified School District is continuing to offer a Transitional Kindergarten program at selected schools for the 2013-14 school year. The school sites that will be offering Transitional Kindergarten in the Fall are: Castle Rock, Collegewood, Evergreen and Vejar Elementary Schools.
This program is a part of a statewide reform that launched in the 2012-13 school year. The Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 gradually changes the entry birth date for kindergarten from December 2 to September 1 over a three year span.
Transitional Kindergarten offers a bridge between preschool and kindergarten age children in California. The program is designed to meet the needs of students who will turn five on September 2 through December 2. California’s children begin kindergarten at a younger age than students in almost any other state, often before they have the maturity and social, early literacy and pre-math skills needed to meet the challenges of their kindergarten year and beyond. The program provides our young learners with “the gift of time” by giving them the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment that is tailored to meet their developmental, emotional, social and academic needs.
