WALNUT, CA - On Thursday, September 10, the Walnut High School Social Science students and staff came together to remember, reflect, and honor the lives forever changed by the events of September 11, 2001. Students placed nearly 3,000 American flags across the school’s front lawn, creating a powerful 20-foot-tall “9/11,” a Pentagon-shaped memorial, and placed 4-by-6-inch flags into the grass to honor every life lost in the September 11 attacks.
The memorial is more than a display, it is a meaningful tradition that gives students an opportunity to pause, learn, remember, and honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives. Through this experience, students reflect on the first responders, military personnel, survivors, families, and communities whose lives were forever impacted by the events of that day.
We are especially grateful to the Walnut High School Social Science teachers, Ms. Andrea DeAntonio-Takahashi, Mr. Brett Landis, Mr. Justin Panililio, Mr. Andy Perez, and Mr. Robert Sandoval, who have guided students in creating this special memorial. Their dedication ensures that the lessons of September 11 and the importance of remembering those we lost, continue to be passed from one generation of students to the next.
As part of this year’s reflection, many students selected a biography from The New York Times Portraits 9/11/2001 about one of the individuals who lost their life on September 11. Students then reflected on that person’s life and story, writing about how learning about their experiences touched and impacted them personally. This activity encouraged students to look beyond a number and remember the individual lives and stories behind the tragedy.
We’re proud of the Mustangs who have participated in this long-standing tradition since 2011 to create this annual flag memorial, honoring the victims of 9/11 and providing a meaningful opportunity for our entire community to reflect and remember the loss and heroic sacrifice of that day 25 years ago.
