Walnut Valley USD proudly recognizes Juneteenth and remains committed to fostering a culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. Through ongoing learning opportunities and resources, we strive to create an environment where every member of our community feels seen, respected, and supported.
On June 19, we recognize Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. For generations, communities across the United States have celebrated Juneteenth as a time to reflect on freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equity and justice. In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday. To learn more about the history and significance of Juneteenth, we encourage you to visit the Diversity Think Tank Resources page and read the History article on Juneteenth.
As a reminder, all WVUSD schools and District offices will be closed on June 19 in observance of Juneteenth.
