Walnut High School Hosts Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for 15,700 Square-Foot Gym
Voter-Passed Measure WV Funded the $7.7 Million Project
Walnut, CA (September 19, 2024) — Walnut Valley Unified School District (WVUSD) signaled the completion of the new 15,700 square-foot gymnasium at Walnut High School (WHS) during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 18 at WHS.
Measure WV, which voters passed in November 2018, provided the funding for the $7.7
million Project.
“Our community was instrumental in helping us bring this project to fruition,” said Principal Michele Lew, EdD at WHS. “Without their votes to pass Measure WV, we wouldn’t be here today.”
Superintendent Robert Taylor, EdD, added, “This new facility will provide students with a modernized gym to enrich their lives. For many years, students will have endless opportunities to engage in physical activities that will help them lead healthy and active lifestyles.”
The gymnasium includes basketball, badminton, and volleyball practice courts, a scoreboard, bleachers, and a weight room. Among others, the multi-use building was designed to support athletics, activities, performing arts, showcase nights, and community events.
“As a long-time coach at WHS, I thank the community for supporting us to bring this important facility to life and helping us to prepare students for their postsecondary journeys in and outside this gym,” said WHS Activities Director Jerry Person.
WVUSD Board of Trustees President Helen Hall added, “We’re truly thankful to our parents and community who supported Measure WV to give students the necessary tools to push the boundaries of athletics and knowledge, we are proud to open this first-class facility for our mighty Mustangs.”
The WHS Orchestra and Chamber Choir — under the direction of Corey Wickes and Katie Takahashi — performed for guests, including local dignitaries, parents, teachers, staff, students, and other community members.
Construction of the gymnasium was completed in the spring and opened in May. WVUSD postponed the ribbon-cutting ceremony until now to accommodate all the end-of-year activities at the School.
