By Kelli Gile, WVUSD Office of Community Resources

WALNUT, CA—The Walnut Valley USD Board of Trustees kicked off May 15 meeting with the recognition of stellar students and community partners from Diamond Bar and Walnut High Schools.

Trustees honored Diamond Bar High senior Zachary Rosen with the Super Star Student Award. Zach has immersed himself into the culture of success at DBHS, involved in numerous activities and clubs, and always in a leadership role. He has been most exemplary in his work in the instrumental music program, participating in marching band, jazz band, wind ensemble, symphony orchestra, and pit orchestra. He is an outstanding young trumpet player, recognized as both a soloist and ensemble star. In the academic field, he is equally as accomplished, maintaining a perfect 4.0 despite his busy schedule. The best thing about Zach is his quality of character. He is one of the most selfless individuals you will encounter. His understanding of servant leadership is beyond his age, and his motivation is truly to lift up the people around him. “I have no doubt he will continue to have an impact on everyone he encounters. He is a student who will be missed!” lauded Principal David Hong.

Brahma Boosters President Sheryl Phung received the Partner in Education Award. Sheryl has provided exceptional leadership, with a strong focus on building Booster membership and establishing cohesive partnerships with other Mag 7 group leaders. She creates a prominent presence on campus to enhance visibility within the parent community. Her outstanding partnership efforts have resulted in successful fundraising initiatives that provide support for many groups and clubs on campus. Sheryl constantly explores new and innovative avenues for fundraising, including monthly clothing drives, Quartermania events, Graduation Booster Section Seating, Senior Yard Sign fundraisers, and more. Her dedication shows in her tireless volunteer efforts for events such as Summer Registration meetings, Monthly Mag 7 meetings, Rodeo Round-Up, Back To School Night, Staff Holiday Celebration, Open House, and the Staff Appreciation Luncheon.  “Diamond Bar High School is truly fortunate to have Sheryl as a Community Partner!” Principal Hong said.

Walnut High senior Sofia Majeed was honored with the Super Star Student Award.  Sofia’s dedication and enthusiasm has shone through in every facet of campus life. Whether it's Publications, Sports Medicine, National Honor Society, UNICEF, Speech and Debate, Model United Nations, Mock Trial, Class Cabinet, or Student Think Tank, Sofia not only participated, she thrived. Her commitment to making the most out of her four years at Walnut High has been truly admirable. However, what sets Sofia apart is her exceptional character. She consistently shows empathy and compassion for others, effortlessly gets along with everyone, and makes every student feel connected and valued. “Sophia, your impact on campus has been undeniable!” shared Principal Dr. Ryan Maine. “Thank you, for being an inspiration to us all. Your kindness, leadership, and genuine care for others has made our school a better place.”

Walnut High Community Club founder Lily Eibert was lauded with the Partner in Education Award. During the summer of 2019, Lily met the school’s new leader, Dr. Ryan Maine, and within a week, was already in the process of filing paperwork for the Walnut High Community Club. Since that time, Lily has helped raise the school over $150,000, all which has gone back to supporting students and staff. Additionally, her hospitality events been a hit every time, and have brought the school community closer together. Lily’s can-do attitude is admirable. Whenever she has an idea, she will find a way to make it happen. Her passion for making a difference is influential, others follow her lead, and it's made a world of difference at Walnut High School. “Thank you, Lily, from the bottom of our hearts. You're a true superstar, and your legacy will continue to inspire Walnut High School and our District for years to come,” Dr. Maine said.
