Maple Hill Students are Singin’ Green
School benefits from recycling project and helps a local food bank.
Diamond Bar, CA—Maple Hill Elementary students have a lot to be singing about these days.
For the past several months, they’ve been saving bottles and cans and bringing them to school every Wednesday morning before school.
Each week, parent volunteers collected the empty drink containers in front of the Diamond Bar campus. They turned them in for cash at a nearby recycling center.
The recycling project has had a big pay-off for the school and for the community.
The school collected a total of $1,600. Half will be used for technology upgrades, library books, and classroom supplies.
The remaining funds were designated to help a local organization.
On Tuesday, March 8, 3rd grade teacher Susan Kanstul and Principal Nancy Stingley proudly presented an $800 check to the Walnut Valley Food Bank.
Representative Jeanie Stowell is one of the founding members of the organization that began 22 years ago. She told the students that the money would really help make a difference to needy families in the area.
The donation was made at the conclusion of the Singin’ Green musical assembly presented by Mark Beckwith.
He strummed his guitar while singing original and fun songs about recycling including Green Can Mean a lot of Things. Student artwork was projected behind the performance designed to motivate the young audience to reduce, reuse, and recycle our natural resources.
During the Water is Better song, students and teachers started a wave when he sang the words “it’s something to save – start a wave!”
The second and third graders clapped, snapped and clicked their tongues during A Moose Can Teach Us to Reduce.
Students loved seeing Principal Nancy Stingley and their teachers Kelly Morris, Kim McNeil, and Lynda Keelan take the stage donning sock hand puppets. Then everyone joined in singing the “earth friendly” I’m a Worm song.

During the Singin’ Green assembly, student volunteers Jacklyn Ambriz, Zachary Kuo, and Aliyah Badillo came to the stage for an aluminum can stacking contest.
Singer Mark Beckwith brought 3rd grade student volunteers Jeffrey Katrib,Yoshi Karwal, and Sierra Rodriguez to the stage to play wiggling and jiggling molecules during the Solid, Liquid, Gas song.
Students loved seeing Principal Nancy Stingley and 2nd and 3rd grade teachers take the stage donning sock puppets and singing the I’m a Worm song.
