Middle School Students Vie in Math Competition

WALNUT, CA—All three Walnut Valley Unified School District Middle Schools - Chaparral, South Pointe, and Suzanne, entered teams in the East San Gabriel Valley MATHCOUNTS Competition.

The national MATHCOUNTS program is designed to challenge and stimulate interest in math and science for middle school students.  This contest was held at California Polytechnic University, Pomona on February 25 and 26.

The Chaparral team took a 3rd Place award in the team competition with members Benjamin Chen, William Dai, Alex Han, and Jeannie Huang.  The team is coached by teacher Jim Chung.

Suzanne students won the 4th Place team award with members Mike Bao, Brian Deng, Andy Tsai, and William Widjaja.  The team is coached by teacher Amy Erickson.

The Chaparral and Suzanne school teams will now advance to the California State Competition on March 19 at University of California, Irvine.

Suzanne 8th grader John Sim will be advancing to the State competition as an individual competitor.

The competition is administered by MATHCOUNTS, one of the country's largest and most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students.

Congratulations to all our Walnut Valley “mathletes” - they're all winners!
