WVUSD Trustees Celebrate Outstanding Students, Partners in Education

April 17, 2023

By Kelli Gile, WVUSD Office of Community Resources

WALNUT, CA—Walnut Valley USD Board of Trustees continued a long-standing tradition of recognizing exemplary students and community partners during the March 15 meeting.

Suzanne Middle School eighth grader Denise Lee was the school’s “clear choice” to be honored with the Super Star Student Award, according to Principal Dr. Amy Smith.  She works hard, challenges herself, and exceeds expectations on a constant basis. Denise has been an integral part of the school broadcast team for the past two years writing scripts, reading announcements, performing as a broadcaster, recording events, and taking part as a master editor. She is always the first person to volunteer when help is needed and is a great friend to all. Denise is a star basketball player and helped the school’s team earn an 8-1 record this year. She is also a member of the Principal’s Advisory Council, Care Club, and has been recognized as a Suzanne Challenger for Change because of her awesome character. “Denise, we are proud to celebrate you as our Super Star Student!” Dr. Smith said.

Suzanne Middle School dynamic power couple Kathy and Keith Eggleston were recognized with the Partner in Education Award.  The Egglestons made their mark at the school by generously giving of their time and energy. Both parents serve as substitutes in Walnut Valley USD and Keith works as a noon aide at Suzanne. While on campus, Keith creates a strong team culture and is always willing to take on extra responsibilities. Kathy carries that same level of energy and presence. Both Kathy and Keith have built positive relationships with students and staff and continuously work to keep students safe while creating a fun, respectful environment. “We all know that a school community is stronger because of dedicated parents who are willing to sacrifice their time and expertise for the benefit our students. The Egglestons do just that,” Dr. Smith added.

Ron Hockwalt Academies (RHA) junior Frans Herrera was lauded with the Super Star Student Award. RHA students are encouraged to live the mantra of HOPE: Heart, Opportunity, Perseverance, and Excellence. “Frans has taken this philosophy and run with it,” shared Principal Dr. Ron Thibodeaux. Frans was selected by staff because of the resilience that he has shown since coming to RHA this year. He has adjusted study habits, is making up credits, and setting himself up for the possibility of returning to Walnut High School next year and receiving his diploma. “We celebrate Frans Herrera, his practice of the mindset of HOPE, and the tremendous growth that he has shown while a student at RHA. With continued effort like that shown this past school year, Frans will be on the path to lifelong success!” Dr. Thibodeaux said.

Retired Walnut High School art teacher and grade level coordinator Ruthellyn Whittington was honored with the Ron Hockwalt Academies (RHA) Partner in Education Award. Ruthellyn, a professional artist who specifies in textile/fiber art, was coaxed to come out of retirement and guest teach art lessons to RHA students. The seasoned teacher and lifelong educator facilitated fantastic works of art from the students. The teens were amazed to have completed assignments that highlighted abilities that they were unaware they possessed.  “It is so refreshing to have one of our own retired teachers take the time to come back to the school site to give back. We are so thankful that Ruthellyn Whittington took the time to do just that!”  Dr. Thibodeaux said.
