WALNUT, CA—The Walnut Valley USD Board of Trustees kicked off the February 16 meeting with the recognition of outstanding students and parents.

Cyrus J. Morris fifth grader Delilah Garcia received the Super Star Student Award for demonstrating grit and positivity. Delilah is cherished by her classmates, always lending a helping hand, and championing them. Delilah is also the poster child for resilience and perseverance, according to Principal Kelly Morris. Any time she faces an academic obstacle, she maintains a positive outlook and persists.  “Delilah becomes a wonder woman, mustering up super hero internal strength until her growth mindset kicks into overdrive,” Principal Morris said.

Parent volunteer Grace Sabbatella was honored with the Partner in Education Award for dedicated service at Cyrus J. Morris Elementary. Grace has been the school’s Community Club treasurer for the past three years. “Whatever happens on our campus, Grace is there providing assistance,” Principal Morris added. As treasurer, Grace’s guidance was instrumental during the school closure when resources and donations were limited.  Her budgetary vision kept the site afloat during the most difficult of times. Grace also has a heart for all students and families. “Her focus on the school community never waivers!”

Westhoff Elementary fifth grader Lila Xue was lauded with the Super Star Student Award for perseverance. Lila arrived at Westhoff in the third grade with little English.  “From day one, she came to school every day ready to learn,” shared Principal Dr. Sandra Lee. Lila never gave up even when things were hard, always had a positive attitude, and a smile on her face.  Lila faced many challenges coming to a new country and learning a new language, according to her teacher Vicky Kim. “She always tried her best!” Lila has turned a challenge into a triumph through her dedication and commitment.  “We are so proud of her!” Principal Lee added.

Parent volunteer Sandra Chen received the Partner in Education Award for the lasting impact she has made at Westhoff Elementary. Sandra has a positive energy and is so patient when working with students. She is artistic, kind hearted, generous with her time, and always willing to help. “Sandra is one of those parents you would like to clone!” Principal Lee said describing her as the model of a dedicated volunteer and a wonderful and generous human being. “Her generosity will always be warmly remembered!”
