WVUSD Trustees Celebrate Vejar Shining Stars

WALNUT, CA—Walnut Valley USD Board of Trustees kicked off the September 15 meeting by recognizing an exemplary student and parent from Vejar Elementary School.

The Super Star Student Award was presented to tenacious fifth grader Jolie Wang for her “bright spirit, kind heart, and soul of joy,” according to Principal Whitney Prenger.

As a third grader, Jolie endured treatment for an autoimmune disease while studying at home under the guidance of her teacher, Rick Lantow.

After successfully completing treatment, Jolie’s doctor’s cleared her to return to school for the fourth grade, but unfortunately the COVID-19 pandemic prompted a year of distance learning.

Throughout the school closure, Jolie joined her fourth-grade class on Zoom and brought her beautiful smile back on campus for the spring hybrid format.

This year, she will be featured in a Camfel Production for schools celebrating inclusion and diversity.

She will also represent Vejar as a member of the Superintendent’s Student Advisor Council.

“Jolie is a true ray of sunshine who has persevered, overcome, and brought joy to our school. Congratulations, Jolie!” Prenger commented.

Vejar parent and WVUSD employee Natalie Candelaria was honored with the Partner in Education Award.

Natalie serves as a one-on-one instructional aide for special education, offering support to the student she serves to ensure success throughout the day.

Throughout the years, Natalie has built special bonds with Vejar students and staff.

During distance learning, she was on campus with her student as often as possible to join a connectivity cohort.

On Zoom lesson days, she created opportunities to stay connected and engaged with creative strategies for social emotional support, including outdoor picnics, arts and crafts, beach chair set ups, brain breaks, and more.

“Natalie is a rock star! She has truly cracked the code with our kids and continues to support our school by sharing her love, support, and time,” Principal Prenger said during the presentation.
