RE: COVID Response Protocols

Dear WVUSD Parents and Guardians,

First and foremost, we thank you for your partnership and support as we strive to put “Kids First, Every Student, Every Day” with the reopening of all schools.

The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff remain our top priority.  All safety recommendations and protocols adhering to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health have been implemented.  The WVUSD 2021-2022 Safe Practices Handbook was emailed to all parents and guardians last week, and it describes the protocols that are in place.  We have attached the handbook with this communication for your reference.

One of the protocols outlined in the handbook is WVUSD’s Response to COVID Situations at School.  As described below, parents will receive a phone call if their child shows symptoms or if their child is in close contact with a person at school with a confirmed positive COVID test.  Parents may receive initial phone calls as a response to positively identified COVID cases.  Parents whose children are directed to quarantine will receive follow-up phone calls from our district staff with detailed information.  You may receive these follow-up calls during the evening hours.

What Happens if a Child Shows Symptoms at School

If a student shows symptoms while on campus, the following steps will be taken:

  • The student will be moved to an isolation space on campus away from other students and will be supervised there by a staff member.
  • Depending on the symptoms, the students may be further evaluated by a school nurse or health clerk to determine if the symptoms are consistent with COVID-19 infection. If the symptoms are determined to be consistent with COVID-19 infection, the parents will be contacted and asked to immediately pick the child up from school.
  • The District’s contact tracing team will be notified of the situation and will follow up with the parent/guardian to give instructions and information on quarantine and testing.

NOTE: The student should be kept home until the family is given instructions by the District.

What Happens if a Child Tests Positive for COVID-19

If a student tests positive for COVID-19, we ask that the parent/guardian keep the student home and report the positive test to the school administration by contacting the administration at the school or by contacting the school office staff.  The District’s contact tracing team will be notified of the situation and will follow up with the parent/guardian to give instructions and information on isolation and the criteria that must be met in order for the student to return to school.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidelines for isolation following a positive COVID-19 test can be found here: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/acd/ncorona2019/covidisolation/#Isolation.

What Happens if Someone in Your Child’s Class Tests Positive for COVID-19

The Department of Public Health requires that written notification be made to all close contacts. Additionally, Walnut Valley Unified has established a practice of notifying all parents and guardians of a positive case at their child’s school.

As is already the practice, if a person on a school campus is identified as having tested positive for COVID-19, the school will follow current protocols to identify those students who are deemed “close contacts.”  If identified as a “close contact,” vaccinated students with no symptoms will continue to remain in school (as is the current practice).   Students identified as a “close contact” who are unvaccinated and are not experiencing any symptoms will continue to remain in school as long as they have no symptoms AND agree to be tested for COVID twice during the Modified Quarantine period (rather than being quarantined at home for 10 days).  The School District will continue to offer testing services four days per week on various school campuses.  Additionally, all students identified as “close contacts” and who are unvaccinated will continue not to be allowed to participate in extra-curricular activities during the quarantine period even though they are allowed to stay in school (per Public Health rules and regulations). “Close contacts” are generally defined as a person having been within 6 feet of a person who tested positive for COVID-19 for 15 minutes during a 24-hour period.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidelines for quarantine following exposure to a person testing positive for COVID-19 can be found here:  http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/acd/ncorona2019/covidquarantine/.

What Happens if Someone in Your Household Tests Positive for COVID-19

If someone in your household tests positive for COVID-19, we ask that the parent/guardian keep the student home if unvaccinated or has symptoms and report the positive test to the District. This can be done by contacting the administration at the school or by contacting the school office staff. The District’s contact tracing team will follow up with the parent/guardian to give instructions and information on quarantine and the criteria that must be met in order for the student to return to school.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health guidelines for quarantine following exposure to a person testing positive for COVID-19 can be found here:  http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/acd/ncorona2019/covidquarantine/.

Information on the next vaccine clinic, scheduled for Saturday, August 21, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Diamond Bar High School,  will be sent to all parents and guardians.

COVID testing for students and staff will be available beginning Monday, August 16.  Detailed information will be sent to all parents and guardians.

If you have any questions, please utilize the Let’s Talk! feature on our District’s website.

Thank you,

http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/acd/ncorona2019/covidquarantine/

 http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/acd/ncorona2019/covidquarantine/
