WALNUT, CA—Walnut High School swim star Alexis "Lexi" Grant committed to play college athletics at Brigham Young University on National Signing Day.
Grant, 18, who has been competitively swimming since she was six years old, has earned prestigious CIF Southern Section titles and holds several school records.
“From the day Lexi came to our program, she has been one of our outstanding swimmers,” lauded head coach EJ Gautreau.
Lexi is a two-time CIF Champion in the 200-Freestyle, with multiple CIF Relay awards, and a school record holder in the 200 Free Relay, 200 Medley Relay, and 400 Free Relay.
“She has definitely gone down as one of the greatest swimmers who has, or ever will, swim at this school,” Gautreau said.
“It’s a really exciting day!” Lexi said after the February 5 lunchtime ceremony attended by administrators, staff, students, and family members.
“After visiting BYU, I just knew it was the right fit for me!” she added.
“This is such a great accomplishment!” said Principal Ryan Maine announcing that less than two percent of high school athletes go on to Division I programs.
Lexi has also successfully followed in the footsteps of her three older sisters - Rachel, Rebecca, and Andrea - who held Walnut High titles and earned scholarships.
“This is an entire family of amazing swimmers who have come through our school in the past 20 years,” Gautreau said.
“Everybody swam, it just seemed normal!” said Lexi of her early entry into the competitive swimming arena.
“I love the friends that I’ve made in swimming (six days a week)– it’s like another family!”
The letter of intent signing “is a testament to her dedication, hard work, and everything she’s put into the sport,” Gautreau added.
“Lexi has been training for this day and I couldn’t be prouder!”
