December 2, 2019

By Kelli Gile, WVUSD Office of Community Resources

WALNUT, CA—In keeping with tradition, the Walnut Valley USD Board of Trustees honored outstanding students and community members during the November 20 meeting.

C.J. Morris Elementary fifth grader Sean Yao was rewarded with the Super Star Student Award for being passionate about learning and a true example of an IB-PYP student.

The academically gifted student is currently making his way through 7th grade curriculum of Khan Academy.

He works diligently planning and creating real world math projects and is always willing to help his peers.

“Sean is beloved by all who know him and has such a promising future ahead of him!” said Principal Fayroze Mostafa.

Dedicated C.J. Morris Elementary volunteer Jimmy Querido received the Partner in Education Award.

The former parent cycles to campus each day to help with morning valet duties to ensure student safety.

“We are ever so grateful for his dedication and continuous support to our community!” Mostafa said.

Westhoff Elementary fifth grader Denise Lee earned the Super Star Student Award for demonstrating stellar character, supporting classmates, and being a natural born leader on campus.

“Denise is confident, is not afraid to ask questions, and takes charge of her learning. She is an all-around star student!” said former Principal Denise Rendon who is stepping in while Principal Sandra Lee is on maternity leave.

Parent volunteer Ashley Chau received the Partner in Education for generously giving her time and energy to support all students at teachers at the school.

She spends many hours a week at Westhoff and is always happy and eager to help, Rendon said.

“Ashley’s kindness and uplifting attitude is valued and deeply appreciated by our Westhoff staff!”

Veteran teachers Mike (Walnut High School) and Shelly (South Pointe Middle School) Yamashiro were lauded with the WVUSD Partner in Education Award for the generous donation of a handcrafted American flag.

Mike, an avid woodworker, created the special patriotic gift complete with laser-etched logo to show the family’s appreciation to the School District.

“We thank you for our careers and the world-class education for our children, Ryan and Nicole,” the plaque read.
