WALNUT, CA- In keeping with tradition, theWalnut Valley USD Board of Trustees honored outstanding students and community members during the February 20 meeting.

Evergreen Elementary fifth grader Jazmine Zaragoza received the Super Star Student Award.

Jazmine not only possesses the Keys to Success (perseverance, support system, coping strategies, goal setting, self-awareness, and proactivity), but thrives in each one of them,” said Principal Trina Dreyer.

Jazmine has a strong commitment to doing her best. She is organized, responsible, ambitious, and has grit.  She is also a strong supporter for other students.

“We are so proud of all your hard work and know that you will go far and be successful!” Dreyer said.

Volunteers Mona Choi Hwang and Mark Stark were lauded with the Partner in Education Award for their service in the school library.

As Community Club president and busy mother of triplets, Mona organizes and leads activities, fundraisers, and volunteers in each of her children’s classrooms.

Mark is a retired teacher and husband of third grade teacher Lynne Stark.

Together, this dynamic duo made it possible for the library to be open and available to all students.

They spent countless hours working in the library, building relationships with students and  teachers.

“When we needed help the most, they stepped up and quietly took on the challenge,” Dreyer said.

“Thank you for caring and doing something very special for the children at Evergreen!”

Walnut Elementary fifth grader Rhymari Williamson received the Super Star Student Award.

“Rhymari is an amazing young lady who exhibits grit - courage, endurance, consciousness, resilience, and excellence,” said Principal Robert Chang.

Teachers and staff members paid tribute to star student who consistently demonstrates compassion for schoolmates.

“Rhymari brightens the days of others with smiles and hugs, and she makes those around her feel valued and appreciated,” added teacher Shirley Moss.

“She overcomes personal struggles with grace and a smile. She inspires me to be a better teacher and a better person,” said teacher Stephanie Kalscheuer.

“You are a difference maker, a life changer, and a gift to our world!” commented elementary learning specialist Jill Takayama.

Ralph “Papi” Marquez received the Partner in Education Award for Walnut Elementary School.

“He is truly the honorary grandfather of our school and is a dynamic part of our family!” Chang said.

Papi can be found helping and “giving” all around the campus. He brings treats for the children, burritos, tamales, fresh fruit, and snow cones.

Even after a cancer diagnosis last year, Papi has continued to support, and connect with the staff and students.

“In good times and bad, through sickness and heath, he’s been there for us, and we will be there for him,” Chang added.

“Walnut Elementary loves you!  We think of you as family, and are so thankful you have been part of our lives.”

Ron Everett received an award of special recognition for 25 years of dedicated service on the Personnel Commission.

“Ron has impacted thousands of employees and students and has been a role model in the community,” said Superintendent Dr. Robert Taylor.

“His commitment to the District, classified employees, and education has been outstanding. We want to thank you and will truly miss you!” said Board President Helen Hall.

And finally, Robert Cruz with SoCal Gas-Sempra Energy Utility and a CSBA leader received the WVUSD Partner in Education Award for his commitment to education and supporting schools and students.
